The Keto diet has become one of the most talked about and the most popular diets these days.

Does Keto burn belly fat?

That’s the question I went looking for an answer for. The answer I found is…Yes, Keto helps burn belly fat!

Before I talk about how keto helps to burn belly fat…I want to give you a bit of background on my weight loss experience so far.

I have been doing intermittent fasting for the past 8 months or so. If you’re curious, check out my intermittent fasting experience with that here!

There have been a few keto recipes here and there that I made. I have also bought some keto friendly snacks as well, but I haven’t actually gone full keto. Eventually I may do keto as well. I have heard a lot of benefits of combining intermittent fasting and keto for even better weight loss results.

Later in the post, I will talk a bit about intermittent fasting, but I’m going to start by giving a little bit of insight as to what Keto is.

I will also fill you in on how it’s effective for weight loss and how keto will burn belly fat.

So…what IS the Keto Diet?

The keto diet (short for ketogenic) is a good protein, high fat, low carb diet that puts your body in a ketosis state. This state forces your body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates. 

Keto helps you reduce your hunger and blood sugar levels.

The basic idea of a ketogenic diet is for your body to gain more calories from protein and good fat, less from carbohydrates. Avoiding most of the carbs that are easily digested is important.

Staying away from food like sugar, pop, and white bread is key in putting your body in this fat burning state. The reason is that instead of burning off carbs. Without those, your body is forced to burn fat for fuel instead.

What is Ketosis?

Ketosis is a metabolic state where your liver turns fat into ketones. Ketones are little energy molecules. 

Your body uses these ketones for energy. This energy helps burn fat.

When your body is in ketosis, you tend to feel less hungry. It also helps with weight loss.

SO, I have Belly Fat….How Bad IS Belly Fat?

Belly fat is something I’ve battled with for years. Getting rid of belly fat is also the hardest fat to lose on your body!

It is unhealthy to have belly fat and it’s important for your health to lose that excess belly fat.Having that extra belly fat could lead to serious health problems. 

I decided enough was enough and I had to lose weight especially in my belly! Especially after researching why I have belly fat and there’s actually a pretty dangerous type of belly fat!

There are two types of belly fat:

Visceral Fat and Subcutaneous Fat.

Both are a battle to get rid of, but visceral fat is the most dangerous. It’s the fat that surrounds your body organs which is what leads to more serious health issues.

A little more about belly fat.

As we all know, belly fat is unhealthy…But what actually causes fat to accumulate on your belly?

A big factor for belly fat is….you may have guessed….too many carbs! Eating too many carbs spikes insulin levels in our bodies. This spike in insulin leads to more belly fat accumulation.

It’s that spike that leads to increased belly fat.

The reason Keto helps lose belly fat has to do with lowering insulin levels in your body. 

Insulin is such an important hormone that your body uses to move glucose to the cells in your body.

When you are eating too many carbs, insulin isn’t as effective and it leads to insulin resistance.

Once you reduce your carbs, your body is forced to burn your fat for fuel(energy).

So, YES Keto burns belly Fat, but How?!

Keto makes your body burn fat for energy, rather than carbs. This in turn, makes your body burn fat everywhere….including belly fat. 

For this reason, Keto is one of the best diets to be on if you are wanting to lose belly fat.

Some people do keto as a temporary “diet” for weight loss and losing belly fat. If you are looking for permanent change and you can adapt to the keto style of eating, it can be adapted as a lifestyle change.

What Foods Can I Eat On Keto To Help Lose Weight And Burn Belly Fat?

If you’re not familiar with Keto or just learning a little as you go, you may be wondering what the best food to eat while doing keto

Here are the best food choices for Keto:

Most Animal proteins are low in carbs and appropriate for the keto diet.

Proteins like:

  1. beef
  2. chicken
  3. eggs
  4. seafood
  5. Pork

These proteins are all low in carbs you can add to your keto routine. 



Vegetables are a great food for any healthy eating plan really, but especially for keto.

  1. Asparagus
  2. Spinach
  3. Swiss Chard
  4. Lettuce
  5. Brussels Sprouts
  6. Cabbage
  7. Cucumber
  8. Green Beans
  9. Broccoli
  10. Cauliflower
  11. Peppers
  12. Zucchini

Zucchini can be shredded or spiralled and used as a pasta alternative in meals.

I have used our fresh zucchini from the garden a lot instead of spaghetti noodles. It’s delicious!

  1. Cheddar
  2. Mozzarella
  3. Parmesan
  4. Feta cheese

-Just to name a few! Other dairy products are keto friendly as well like greek yogourt.  It’s a great option since it’s higher in protein.

Nuts And Seeds

Not all are the best for keto. Some that are lower in carbs are:

  1. Almonds
  2. Pecans
  3. Walnuts
  4. Flaxseeds
  5. Chia seeds
  6. Macadamia nuts

I have added mixed nuts into my daily eating routine. I try to always have them on hand to grab a little snack on the go. They are also high in fibre which keeps you fuller longer!

Fruit contains natural sugar, but sugar nonetheless spikes your insulin levels.  You have to be careful what fruits you eat on keto so you don’t take your body out of ketosis by spiking your insulin levels. Here are some fruits that are perfect for keto:

  1. Watermelon
  2. Avocado
  3. Blueberries
  4. Strawberries
  5. Raspberries
  6. Lemons
  7. Tomatoes(used as a vegetable, but classified as a fruit!)

I just named some keto fruits you can have, but there are more!

Can You Burn More Belly Fat Combining Keto And Intermittent Fasting?

I have come across this combination quite a bit over the past 8 months on my weight loss journey with intermittent fasting. 

Some Keto styles I have incorporated in my routine, but I haven’t yet gone full keto!

There are a lot of benefits actually for starting intermittent fasting combined with a Ketogenic diet. 

I won’t go into a lot of detail on intermittent fasting, I will just give you a quick definition. 

You can check out my post on intermittent fasting earlier in this post if you want to learn more about it. Intermittent fasting is not a diet. 

It’s a method of eating where you have periods of eating and periods of  fasting.

Intermittent fasting alone makes your body burn fat by lowering blood sugars. The longer the fast, the more your body burns fat.

What About Adding Keto to This
Method of Eating?

Intermittent fasting may help your body reach ketosis quicker than just doing the ketogenic diet by itself. 

It’s not necessary to combine intermittent fasting with keto to achieve weight loss and belly fat loss. 

It may, however, promote more fat loss when combined, including belly fat! 

Here are some great benefits about combining the two for weight loss.

Whether you decide Keto is for you or not, there is one thing to consider. Whatever you decide to do, practising healthy eating habits and adopting an active lifestyle are so important.

These two healthy changes in your life are essential for healthy living and also losing weight if that is your goal! You want to burn belly fat? 

If losing belly fat is your goal, I highly suggest trying Keto. If you really want to supercharge your fat burn and burn even more belly fat? 

Try intermittent fasting and add Keto to the mix! It takes a bit of adjustment just like everything you start!

I will say from my experience so far, it’s worth it!
