Coffee Helps Weight Loss. Why?
  1. Drinking coffee boosts your metabolism which burns more calories.
  2. It is full of antioxidants. As a result, this helps the body get rid of toxins.
  3. Having a cup of coffee also helps suppress appetite which leads to less calories consumed.

First…What IS Coffee?

I know, you’re probably thinking, come on….everyone knows what coffee is. 

You may be right, but just for information purposes…here’s a quick description!

According to the definition on Wikipedia 

Coffee is a drink prepared from roasted coffee beans, seeds of the Coffea plant species. 

Darkly coloured, bitter, and slightly acidic.

It has a stimulating effect on humans, primarily due to its caffeine content. 

This dark hot drink is one of the most popular drinks in the world.

Why Is Coffee So Popular?

I totally get why it’s so popular.

Caffeine! I love coffee. 

I enjoy a good cup of hot coffee after getting out of bed. 

It helps me get moving in the morning and starts my day off with a kick. 

Coffee is one drink I try to make sure I have each morning because I enjoy the taste, especially when the house is quiet. 

My house is always so busy, so when it’s quiet…it enhances my morning coffee experience for sure!

Some Health Benefits of Coffee

Here are some benefits of coffee:
  1. Increases your energy level, thus making you feel less tired.
  2. May lower risk of Type 2 Diabetes
  3. May help brain function
  4. Helps boost metabolism, which burns fat-helps with weight loss

These are just some benefits of coffee. 

When I have coffee, I notice the increased energy it gives me. 

It wakes me up, makes me more alert and I’m able to think clearer.

Let’s talk now about why coffee helps weight loss…

How does Coffee Help Weight Loss?

-Helps to decrease your appetite

When you aren’t as hungry, you tend to eat less! This makes your calorie count less for the day. 

I read here that drinking coffee a ½ hour to 4 hours before meals can have an influence on your appetite and may help you consume less calories.

-Boosts your metabolism

The caffeine in coffee increases your metabolism. This causes your body to burn more fat and ends up with more weight loss.

-It helps you burn more calories

In this post, it mentioned that when you drink coffee, caffeine boosts thermogenesis(the process of your body producing heat.) 

The heat your body produces helps you burn calories.

-Helps increase your workout performance

When you drink coffee before your workout routine, it will give you more energy in your exercises. 

This will help you burn even more calories, which leads to burning more fat.

Here are some reasons to drink coffee before your next workout.

-Helps break down fat

Coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant. 

When you drink coffee, the caffeine triggers the brain to increase adrenaline. This signals your fat tissues to break down fat. These are later released in the blood. 

The caffeine in your coffee will help burn fat by this hormone adrenaline. This is one reason why coffee helps weight loss.

Best Way To Drink Coffee For Weight Loss?

Drinking it Black! 

I actually haven’t been brave enough to go with just black coffee yet. I’m still a creamer kind of girl for my coffee!

If you’re looking though for the best way to lose weight with coffee, just a fresh brewed black coffee will do the trick! My brother drinks black coffee and he really enjoys it that way. 

Maybe I will eventually give up the cream, but I’m just not there yet!

Black coffee is very low in calories. It only has 2 calories in a cup of the hot drink.

A medium coffee with double cream double sugar is around 210 calories. 

I usually try to only have one coffee a day, but according to this article, the average American drinks just over 3 cups of coffee a day.

Now, some drink it black I’m sure. But let’s just say, for example, 3 coffees with 2 sugar, 2 cream. 

That’s about 630 calories a day JUST from coffee! 

My daily calories should be between 1200-1400 calories a day. If I were to have 3 coffees that way, I am drinking half of my calories for the day. 

That’s a lot of calories!

2.7 cups is averaged in Canada for people’s coffee consumption each day so a bit less. That amount is still a lot of calories depending on what you add to your coffee.

What To Add To Coffee To Boost Weight Loss

There are actually ingredients you can add to your coffee to help boost weight loss:

-Cocoa powder! 

There are so many great health benefits in raw cocoa powder. It’s not a surprise it can help with weight loss!

Cocoa powder is full of minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, and fibre.

It’s also high in calcium, iron, potassium, zinc, copper, iron, manganese, phosphorus, and magnesium.

It helps give your metabolism a boost. This helps with weight loss

It aids in reducing inflammation.

It helps reduce body fat.

Try just adding a tsp of cocoa in your coffee mug then add your coffee. You can adjust it to your liking. The weight loss benefits are worth trying it out!


Cinnamon helps stabilize blood sugar levels and raises your insulin sensitivity.

It helps suppress your appetite as well which helps with cravings, and ultimately weight loss.

(Cinnamon and cocoa powder combined in your coffee would taste pretty good I think!)

-Fat – Grass-fed Butter and Coconut Oil

This is a great option if you decide to do the ketogenic diet. Keto is a high fat, low carb diet that helps you lose weight by reaching a state called ketosis. 

I won’t go into too much detail about this, but if you’re interested, I did write a post about Keto and belly fat here.

You can add grass-fed butter and coconut oil to black coffee and it will help boost your metabolism which improves weight loss. 

You can also add MCT oil instead of coconut oil and make what’s called bulletproof coffee. 

This type of coffee is said to boost weight loss as well.

-Dairy Free Milk products

If you really can’t go without a type of “cream” in your coffee, milk alternatives are a great option. 

They are low in calories and healthy for you. 

Products such as almond milk, soy milk, and coconut milk are all great choices if you just can’t do coffee black.

What You Should Avoid In Your Coffee
To Help Weight Loss

If you want to lose weight and boost your results, avoid putting cream, milk, and sugars into  your coffee. 

As I mentioned earlier, black coffee is the best way to drink it for better weight loss. 

I’ve been intermittent fasting since January. You can check out my intermittent fasting journey here. I’ve been seeing a lot of great results and I’m committed to losing weight. 

One thing I can’t seem to let go of yet though is my coffee cream in my daily cup of coffee! Maybe someday I will be, but right now, I just can’t take it black.

Maybe I could….but I’m just not ready to give up my morning cup of pleasure just yet!

Coffee is a great addition to a weight loss plan. 

Coffee helps weight loss in so many ways and it’s something I actually enjoy drinking.

After making this post, I am actually craving coffee now! We will probably lose power tonight because of Hurricane Fiona which should be hitting landfall soon!

JUST in case, I brewed some black coffee and put in the fridge for the morning. If we lose power, ice coffee it is!
