#1- What Is Green Tea?

According to Wikipedia, Green tea is a type of tea that is made from Camellia sinensis leaves and buds that have not undergone the same withering and oxidation process which is used to make oolong teas and black teas.[1]

Green tea originated in China, and since then its production and manufacture has spread to other countries in East Asia.

This tea is usually green, light brown, or yellow colored. It can taste a bit better and some people add things to their tea to enhance the tasting experience.

Green tea is a natural stimulant. It contains a natural source of caffeine. This helps give you a boost when you are tired.

It contains less caffeine than coffee so it’s a hot drink you can have without messing up your sleep schedule.

There are a number of benefits of drinking green tea:

  1. Increases fat burning
  2. Boosts immune system

-Increases Fat Burning-

Green tea contains caffeine. Caffeine gives your metabolism a boost. This causes your body to burn calories and burn fat.

This is the main reason I have added green tea to my intermittent fasting routine.

There are a lot of good reasons to drink green tea, but this one is at the top of my list of why I drink it!

I also notice a boost in my energy level when I have it an hour or so before a workout.

-Boosts Immune System-

Green tea is full of antioxidants. Antioxidants are so important for your body’s immune system.

They help prevent many diseases by protecting our body against the early aging of cells.

Antioxidants are so useful for our health and wellness.

Green tea helps clean and get rid of bacteria from your mouth.

It helps to fight the bacteria that causes gum disease and tooth decay. This keeps your mouth feeling fresh.

Getting rid of this bacteria improves your breath and keeps your mouth healthy from teeth and gum issues.

-May Improve Brain Function-

Green tea contains catechins. I already mentioned that green tea is full of antioxidants. The antioxidant properties of catechins helps improve brain function.

Drinking green tea gives the memory a boost, helps keep your mood positive.

It gives the brain fuel, and helps protect the brain from damage by encouraging new brain cell growth.

-May Lower The Risk Of Some Cancers-

With green tea being so high in antioxidants, green tea could help reduce the risk of cancer.

This is only a theory, but many studies have shown a link between green tea and prevention of some cancers.

Here’s an article published from the National Cancer Institute about tea and cancer prevention.

-May Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes-

According to Diabetes Canada,

Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which your body cannot make enough insulin (a hormone that helps control the amount of glucose or sugar in your blood), or does not properly use the insulin it makes.

Type 2 diabetes is caused by several different risk factors and accounts for 90% of diabetes cases in Canada.

Drinking green tea helps maintain blood sugar levels and keep them under control. The catechin in green tea helps lower the effects of insulin resistance.

Diabetes interrupts the balance between the liver and the pancreas, which decreases the liver’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels.

Green tea helps in stabilising blood sugar levels which is why it may help prevent type 2 Diabetes.

There has been research that the antioxidants in green tea can help improve blood vessel function and blood cholesterol levels. This

Research has shown that antioxidants can promote heart health by improving blood vessel function and blood cholesterol levels.

The antioxidants in green tea can neutralize free radicals and thus reduce or even prevent free radical damage that can cause heart disease.

Studies reveal that the antioxidant properties of green tea may help prevent atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is the hardening and narrowing of the arteries that can eventually block the flow of blood and may lead to heart attack or stroke.

There have been studies shown that drinking green tea helps reduce cholesterol and blood pressure which most times are the cause of heart disease.

#3- Why Does Green Tea Help Weight Loss?

Drinking green tea helps weight loss by giving your body’s metabolism a boost. When your metabolism increases, it helps burn more calories and burn more fat. Green tea helps the body’s metabolism be more effective for losing weight.

Green tea is a natural supplement that has shown to help weight loss. I wrote a post on natural supplements for weight loss here.

What about coffee? Coffee also raises your metabolism and helps your burn calories, burn fat, and ultimately leads to weight loss. What is more effective….coffee or green tea?

Here’s a video on how green tea actually burns fat more than coffee.

#4- How To Drink Green Tea For Weight Loss

When making green tea, it’s best to let your water cool down a bit.

This is because if you pour boiling water onto your tea leaves, it will burn the leaves and you won’t get the tea’s full flavour.

A coworker years ago gave me a great tip about making green tea and I’ve followed it ever since when making it.

This tip is especially helpful if you are not able to have the time for your water to cool down. The way to make green tea is to boil water, put it in your green tea bag in your mug.

Before pouring in your boiling water, pop an ice cube into your mug. This prevents your tea leaves from burning the leaves and you’ll miss out on the tea’s full flavour.

When Should You Drink Green Tea For Weight Loss?

-Morning. Having a cup of green tea in the morning is a good time to have this drink.

It contains a natural source of caffeine so it will give your metabolism a great boost first thing and trigger your fat burning.

It also helps get rid of toxins from your body.

-Before Exercise. Drinking green tea before your exercise routine helps to improve your energy level and burn fat after your workout.

-After Exercise. Drinking green tea after exercise helps restore your body. It also helps release extra stress from your body.

Evening-You can have green tea in the evening as well. As long as you watch the caffeine level since different types of tea have different levels of caffeine.

Green tea can actually help calm you down and prepare you for a good sleep.

How much Green Tea Should I Drink Each Day?

I suggest you should have a cup of green tea 2 times a day. This would maximise the benefits of this tea and give you the best results if you are using green tea as part of your weight loss regimen.

My suggestion would be to have a cup of green tea in the morning either before or with breakfast and then again in the afternoon.

If you exercise in the morning, green tea would be great to consume before your workout.

I can’t seem to get myself moving enough in the mornings for a workout, so I have a cup of green tea early afternoon then get my workout in then!

The green tea I have right before my exercise does seem to help give my metabolism an extra kick of energy and burn more calories.

Coffee actually helps boost my workouts as well. I did write a blog post on drinking coffee for weight loss here.

What Can I Add To Green Tea If I don’t Enjoy the Taste?

If you are like me, I honestly don’t enjoy the taste of green tea. I find it bitter and leaves a strange taste on my tongue.

I drink it for the benefits. Without wanting to sabotage my weight loss, how can I make it taste better to enjoy it more?

Try adding these low or no calorie options to your green tea:

  1. Mint leaves and cinnamon
  2. Lemon
  3. Ginger
  4. Stevia leaves
  5. Honey
